Molecular Microbiologist for Antibiotic Drug Discovery
The Cardona Laboratory in the University of Manitoba, Canada is seeking a highly motivated Postdoctoral Fellow in Molecular Microbiology to join the project “Translational Approach with AI for Klebsiella Drug Discovery.”
This international initiative—funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation—brings together an interdisciplinary team of researchers from Brazil, Latin America, Portugal and Canada to accelerate the discovery of new antibiotics targeting multidrug-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae. The project integrates artificial intelligence (AI), molecular modeling, bioinformatics, and experimental microbiology to identify and validate new therapeutic targets and promising antimicrobial compounds.
The successful candidate will work with Dr. Cardona to perform genetic and functional validation of compound–target pairs using CRISPR interference (CRISPRi-seq) and other molecular genetics approaches in K. pneumoniae.
Qualifications
- PhD in Microbiology, Molecular Biology, or a related field
- Strong background in bacterial genetics and physiology, ideally in Gram-negative bacteria
- Hands-on experience with molecular cloning, gene editing, and phenotypic assays
- Experience handling Klebsiella strains is an asset
- Given the international nature of the team, proficiency in Portuguese or Spanish is an asset.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work in a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment
